AVFD Flea Market

The pictures were taken at the local flea market in Aspinwall that is sponsored by the Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department that is open Sunday mornings from April through October as long as the weather holds up. The market is set up in the Borough Parking Lot located on Freeport Road. So if you are out and about on Sunday be sure to visit this flea market and stop by the Freedom Farm stands.

The fire department sells spaces in the community parking lot across the street from the borough building. This is the major fund raiser for the Fire Department which sells coffee, water and sodas along with doughnuts and hot dogs to raise funds for the volunteer work that this department does for the community.

Farmer's Market

The King Family, whose Freedom Farm is in Mars, Pennsylvania, has been growing and selling vegetables at local farmer's markets for as long as I can remember. If you have any questions concerning their products, Pete gave permission to have you telephone them at 724-586-5551.

This Sunday, Pete and his family were selling cauliflower, corn, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, fresh sweet basil, cucumbers for pickling, swiss chard, raspberries, tomatoes, green and red apples. I think I saw some nectarines among the baskets but I can't be sure about that.

Starting in the 2014 flea market season this particular vendor starting bringing a refrigerated vehicle and selling fresh butchered meats along with the vegetables they have been selling for the past three years.

This farming family travels to locations around Pittsburgh several days a week. Some of the locations that they frequent are Rockies on Route 8 on Tuesday, Carrick Farmer's Market on Wednesday, Beechview Farmer's Market on Thursday, the Northside Farmer's Market on Friday and the Aspinwall Flea Market on Sunday mornings

Pennsylvania Senior Citizen Vouchers

In Pennsylvania there is a program which provides senior citizens who meet the criteria with four $5 checks to equal $20 per individual per year to be used at registered farmer's markets throughout the state. The whole theme being to provide healthy fruits and vegetables to senior citizens while patronizing local growers.

The must have income within the range set and each five dollar certificate must be used at one time. The senior picks his fruits and vegetable and then signs the check over to the farmer. You need to ask if the farmer is licensed to accept the checks before making your purchase.
